Clay Masks in K-Beauty: What Clay Masks Can Really Do and How to Use Them Correctly

Clear pores, a matte feel, no shine: clay masks have a reputation. What's true, who they're worth it for and why less is often more.

    In this article you'll learn:

    • What clay does in face masks
    • Which skin clay masks suit and which they don't
    • How often and how long to use them
    • What multi masking means

What Does Clay Do in a Face Mask?

Clays such as kaolin, bentonite or volcanic clay can bind excess sebum and impurities. On the skin this feels clean and lightly mattified after use. That's why clay masks are especially popular for oily skin and visible pores.

An honest assessment: a mask can't shrink pores permanently. It can absorb sebum and residue and so make the skin look finer for a while. Pore size itself is largely genetic.

Which Skin Are Clay Masks Suited For?

Best for oily and combination skin, especially in the T-zone with nose, forehead and chin. Blemish-prone skin can benefit too, because the mask absorbs excess sebum.

Dry and sensitive skin need more caution. Clay can dry out. Soothing versions with centella or mugwort and shorter contact times make sense here.

How to Use a Clay Mask Correctly

Apply the mask to cleansed skin in an even layer, avoiding the eye and lip area. More product doesn't mean more effect.

Leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes unless the pack says otherwise. The most important point: don't let the mask dry out completely and crack. As soon as it feels tight, rinse it off.

Then follow with toner, serum and moisturiser. After a clay mask the skin needs moisture, even if it feels fresh.

    Merielyn's Note

I used to leave clay masks on far too long because I thought longer works better. The result was tight, irritated skin. Since then I take them off as soon as they start to dry.

I like using them with multi masking best: clay only on the T-zone, a soothing mask on the rest of the skin. That suits my combination skin much better than one mask for the whole face.

    What Does Multi Masking Mean?

Multi masking means using different masks on different areas of the face. Clay goes where the skin gets oily, for example nose and forehead. On dry areas like the cheeks you apply a hydrating or soothing mask.

That way you respond to your skin's real needs instead of treating it all the same. And the preparation for it is a thorough cleanse, as described in the article on cleansing balm or oil.

The Most Common Mistakes with Clay Masks

First: using them too often. Once or twice a week is enough for oily skin, less for dry skin.

Second: leaving them on too long. Dried, cracked clay draws moisture out of the skin.

Third: forgetting care afterwards. A clay mask always needs moisture after it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Clay Masks

How often can I use a clay mask?

Once or twice a week for oily skin, more like once for combination skin, and only occasionally or not at all for dry and sensitive skin.

Does a clay mask shrink my pores?

Not permanently. It can absorb sebum and make pores look less noticeable for a while.

Can I use a clay mask with acne?

It can help absorb sebum on oily, blemish-prone skin. With inflamed, irritated skin, caution is advised because too much drying can weaken the barrier.

What's the difference between kaolin and volcanic clay?

Kaolin is considered rather mild, volcanic clay is often used for deeper cleansing. How strong a mask is always depends on the whole formula, though.
