Slugging is the viral K-beauty step where you finish your evening routine with an occlusive layer to lock in moisture overnight. The method originally comes from the Reddit skincare community, where a thin layer of petroleum jelly (petrolatum) was applied as the very last step. The name comes from the English word „slug“, because the shiny film is reminiscent of a slug's trail.

In the K-beauty world, slugging is interpreted in a more modern way today: instead of pure petroleum jelly, lighter occlusive creams and barrier balms are often used, which feel more pleasant on the skin. The principle stays the same, though – a finishing film that holds the underlying care in place and protects the skin from drying out overnight.

How Slugging Works

The core of the method is occlusion: the finishing layer sits over the skin like a protective film and reduces transepidermal water loss, or TEWL for short. This is the moisture your skin normally loses to its surroundings overnight. By slowing this loss, more moisture stays where it's needed.

It's important to understand that slugging is not an active ingredient but a technique. The occlusive layer doesn't add moisture itself; it seals in what you applied beforehand. That's why slugging only works well when the skin underneath has already been prepped with hydrating steps such as a toner or a hyaluronic acid serum.

The Right Order for Slugging

Slugging always comes at the very end of your evening routine. Start with a thorough but gentle cleanse so the skin is clean and receptive. Then comes the hydration layer: a hydrating toner and a hyaluronic acid serum bring moisture into the skin, followed by a cream if needed. Only as the very last step do you apply the occlusive layer.

One crucial point concerns active ingredients: retinol, AHA/BHA acids and other irritating actives do not belong under an occlusive layer. Occlusion can amplify their effect, and with it their irritation potential. So plan slugging for nights without strong actives and focus on pure hydrating care instead.

Who is Slugging For – and Who Should Avoid It?

Slugging is considered especially helpful for dry, dehydrated and barrier-damaged skin. In winter too, when heated air and cold weather dry the skin out further, the method can make a noticeable difference. Anyone who wakes up with tight, rough skin often benefits most from an occlusive finish.

You should be cautious with oily, blemish-prone or acne-prone skin, since a dense occlusive layer can clog pores and encourage breakouts. Likewise, don't apply slugging on nights when you use retinol or acids. When in doubt, it's worth trying the method first only on individual areas or once or twice a week.

The Korean interpretation of slugging relies less on heavy petroleum jelly and more on modern barrier creams.
