What Is Double Cleansing?

Double cleansing is the two-step cleansing principle that forms the foundation of every Korean skincare routine. First you use an oil-based cleanser, then a water-based one. The idea behind it is simple: different impurities need different cleansers.

Oil dissolves oil. Makeup, sunscreen and the skin's own sebum are oil-soluble and are best removed with an oil or balm. Sweat, dust and water-soluble residue are then taken care of by the water-based cleanser.

Why One Cleanse Often Isn't Enough

A single cleanser always has to make a compromise. If it's strong enough to dissolve sunscreen and makeup, it often dries out the skin. If it's mild, oil-soluble residue is left behind that can clog pores and prevent a fresh complexion.

This is exactly where double cleansing comes in: the first step does the heavy lifting, the second cleanses gently afterwards. The skin gets thoroughly clean without over-stressing the skin barrier, the basis for any following ingredients to actually absorb.

Step 1: Oil or Balm

The first step is done on dry skin with dry hands. The oil or balm is gently massaged in to dissolve makeup, sunscreen and sebum. Then you emulsify with a little water until the texture turns milky, and rinse everything off thoroughly.

Whether oil or balm is a matter of taste: balms are solid and travel-friendly, oils flow more easily and spread quickly. Both serve the same purpose and are especially important if you wear makeup or sunscreen.

Step 2: The Water-Based Cleanse

After the oil step comes a water-based cleanser, usually a gel or a foam. It removes the last water-soluble residue and leaves the skin fresh but not dried out. Look for a mild formula that respects the skin barrier.

Important: your skin shouldn't feel tight after cleansing. A tight feeling is a sign the cleanser is too harsh. Good water-based cleansers clean thoroughly and still feel comfortable.

Who It's For and How Often

Double cleansing is most worthwhile in the evening, to wash the day off your skin. Anyone who wears makeup or sunscreen benefits most. In the morning a gentle water-based cleanser, or even just water, is usually enough.

The method suits all skin types, as long as the products match your skin type. Oily skin reaches for lighter gel textures, dry skin for richer, nourishing formulas. Sensitive skin chooses mild, fragrance-free options.
