AHA – gentle exfoliation for glow, smoother skin & refined pores
Why AHA fruit acids are so popular in K-beauty when it comes to smooth, radiant, even-looking skin.
In this article, you'll learn:
- What AHA fruit acids are and how they work
- Which skin types AHAs are especially suitable for
- How to safely integrate AHAs into your K-beauty routine
What are AHAs?
AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) are water-soluble fruit acids that dissolve dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. The most well-known include glycolic acid, lactic acid and mandelic acid. In Korean skincare, they are used to refine the complexion, boost glow and make skin texture appear more even.
The key benefits of AHAs
- Gentle exfoliation: dissolves dead skin cells on the surface and helps skin appear smoother.
- More radiance: AHAs can brighten dull, tired-looking skin and deliver visible glow.
- More even skin tone: with regular use, they can help to visibly reduce the look of uneven pigmentation.
- Better product absorption: after AHAs, serums and creams can absorb more effectively.
Who are AHAs suitable for?
AHAs are particularly suitable for:
- dry to normal skin
- skin with dull, uneven-looking areas
- skin prone to dark spots or mild post-acne marks
Very sensitive or highly irritated skin should start slowly and opt for gentler AHAs such as mandelic acid or lower concentrations.
How to integrate AHAs into your routine
It's best to start with 1–2 applications per week in the evening and observe how your skin reacts. Then you can gradually increase the frequency.
- Cleansing: gentle cleanser that doesn't strip the skin.
- AHA toner or serum: apply to dry skin and let it absorb briefly.
- Hydration: soothing serum or essence (e.g. with hyaluronic acid, centella).
- Cream: barrier-supporting cream for a nourished finish.
Important: AHAs make the skin more sensitive to UV radiation. That's why a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 50) is an essential part of your routine the next morning.
